Abstract:
The collection consists of pre- and post-election letters 1885-1886 to James C. Nealon, who was nominated and elected to serve
the position of Assessor of San Francisco from 1887-1890. The first letter is a handwritten draft of the announcement to run,
"... a Card, To my fellow Democrats and the Workingmen of San Francisco ...," which includes instruction to "... put a border
around it, yet not a plain block on ... for Morning Call, Daily Examiner." Letterhead imprints include letters from the Law
Offices of Wilson & Wilson; Capital Hotel Sacramento, Blessing & Guthrie, Propietors; S. Snodgrass & Co.; T.N. Dunphy & Co.;
Law Office of JND. J. Dwyer; Matthew Nunan, proprietor Hibernia Brewery; Pacific Hotel Company; Nucleus Hotel; H. Chamberlain,
Prop'r. Office of San Francisco Journal of Commerce Publishing Company; Gustave Touchard, Jr., Attorney at Law; Huntington,
Hopkins & Co. and the Western Union Telegraph Company.

Note:
James Callaghan Nealon was born in Ireland, in 1849. His parents were Richard Nealon and Margaret Callaghan (Nealon). James
Nealon lived in California over 50 years working primarily in real estate. He was elected to and served the position of San
Francisco Assessor from 1887-1890. He became the State Senator of the 21st Senatorial District in 1917. Representing San Francisco,
he sat on the Senate Standing Committee of Banking in 1917 and on the Committee for Insurance in 1919. James C. Nealon died
March 1, 1920.
